Bittern chicks - a FIRST in reserve history! We're extremely excited to announce the hatching of seven bittern chicks for the first time in Martin Mere's recorded history. In an attempt to encourage a breeding pair to the reedbed, our reserve team completed works such as clearing scrub, cutting large areas of reed to create an area of different aged reeds and raising the water levels on the reedbed to allow fish to thrive so that the bitterns would have enough supply to feed their young.
