The foreign policy of Denmark is substantially influenced by its membership of the European Union (EU); Denmark including Greenland joined the European Economic Community (EEC), the EU's predecessor, in 1973.

A majority of Danes voted “yes” to abolish the opt-out. The abolition means, that Denmark, since the 1st of July, has entered into EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy. Denmark now has the opportunity to participate in and finance EU’s military operations.

The EU Treaty gives Denmark the right to remain outside the euro area, even when all convergence criteria are met (opt-out). The Danish krone joined the Exchange Rate Mechanism II (ERM II) on 1 January 1999 and observes a central rate of 7,46038 to the euro with narrow fluctuation margins of ±2.25%.

Aug 29, 2024 · Denmark is preparing for a significant responsibility as it takes over the presidency of the European Union (EU) on July 1, 2025. The preparations are underway, and according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Udenrigsministeriet), this will be the largest foreign policy challenge for Denmark in the decade.

Dec 5, 2023 · The three opt-outs – retsforbehold in Danish – were negotiated by Copenhagen with the EU, and their presence is largely due a result of a series of referenda held by Denmark on EU matters over the decades.

Denmark has been an active member of the EU since 1973. Denmark has worked for an efficient and well functioning internal market, transparent decision-making procedure, and clear and visible results for the individual citizens.
