The White House Correspondents' Association protested a decision by the White House on Tuesday to bar an Associated Press reporter from an event with President Donald Trump over the news agency's decision to continue referring to the Gulf of Mexico.

When President Donald Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico renamed the Gulf of America, The Associated Press said it would keep the body of water’s previous name, a nod to its global user base and centuries of precedent. The decision had consequences Tuesday, when the White House barred the wire service from two events.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday defended the decision to block the Associated Press from access to an Oval Office event earlier this week, saying they were trying to hold the news organization “accountable” for not renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
