World record longest lightning flash discovered – a whopping 515-mile-long bolt

Scientists July 31 announced the discovery of the world's longest lightning flash ever detected – a whopping 515-mile-long bolt that blasted across central U.S. skies from Dallas to Kansas City in October 2017. In East Coast terms, that's equivalent to the distance from New York City to Charlotte, N.C.

Massive lightning bolt from Texas to Missouri breaks record for world’s longest flash

The 515-mile bolt stretched from East Texas to near Kansas City, Mo., a roughly eight-hour distance by car, according to the World Meteorological Organization. In comparison, the average bolt of lightning measures less than 10 miles, according to the National Weather Service.
