The Tennessee Valley could see some of the heaviest snowfall, with 6 inches expected on Friday. A wide swath of the country is under winter weather warnings and advisories and will see impacts including "widespread closures, treacherous travel, scattered power outages, and downed branches," the weather service said.

Sleet and snow began to fall in parts of Richland and Lexington counties earlier than initially forecast, as parts of the Midlands remained under a winter storm warning Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Tri-County area around Charleston sees morning sleet, snow flurries. National Weather Service said most action was in Berkeley, Colleton, Dorchester counties.
