Despite heavy campaigning by U.S. President Donald Trump for the prestigious recognition, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for her democracy advocacy in the Latin American nation.
The prize honored Machado, who is in hiding, for keeping “the flame of democracy burning,” but the White House accused the Nobel jury of “placing politics over peace.”
Ms. Machado has urged President Trump to help oust Venezuela’s autocrat, Nicolás Maduro, and to back the result of an election that independent monitors say Mr. Maduro stole.
