Because of the drydock’s length, it is lowered in stages, first lowering Texas’ stern then its bow, back and forth until the ship starts to rise off the 157 keel blocks supporting it in the dock.

Blocks have to be carefully positioned so that they sit under strong points of the ship's structure and transfer the load to strong parts of the dry dock's deck.
