In the latest grocery industry shakeup, Aldi has sold the iconic Winn-Dixie grocery chain it acquired less than a year ago. Aldi said it will keep the Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets it plans to convert into Aldi stores.

Despite frigid temperatures, the opening of Northport's second Aldi grocery store lured a big crowd of customers.

Discount grocery chain Aldi announced a plan to open more than 225 new store locations in 2025 as part of the next phase of its five-year national growth strategy. Aldi says the new stores will open through a combination of new locations and converting select Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores to the Aldi format.

Terry’s Country Store, on Mayport Road, has been closed for about two years. “We had to start driving all the way down to Walmart and Winn-Dixie,” said neighbor Victor Alvarado. Alvarado remembers just how convenient it was having a local grocery store just down the street from his house.

Aldi location will open in a former Winn-Dixie in Northport, Alabama. The new store's grand opening will be on Feb. 20 and feature giveaways and special offers. Aldi recently acquired Winn-Dixie and Harvey's stores in the Southern US and plans to open hundreds of new stores by 2028.

ALDI aims to open 225 new locations by 2025, including 100 converted stores from Southeastern Grocers, to strengthen its presence in the U.S. market.

The location of a Winn-Dixie store converted into a new ALDI store in Zachary could open by the spring. Loxley Division Vice President Heather Moore confirmed the store is expected to open later this spring.
