(AP) — A 5.6 magnitude earthquake that struck off Peru’s central coast Sunday, rattling Lima and the port city of Callao, has left one person dead and five injured, authorities said.

An earthquake in Peru kills more than 300 people. The 7.9 magnitude quake struck near Ica, on the coast, and shook Peru's capital, Lima, for more than a minute. It also produced a small tsunami.

LIMA, Peru, Sept. 26 -- A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7 hit northern Peru late Sunday, causing power outages and cutting phone service throughout much of the region.

Earthquakes are frequent in Peru, which lies on the Pacific's so-called Ring of Fire. On August 15, 2007, a similarly sized quake struck near Lima, killing more than 500 people.
