Tropical Storm Gabrielle formed Wednesday in the Atlantic Ocean but was far from land, forecasters said.

Tropical Storm Gabrielle formed Wednesday morning over the open Atlantic Ocean and is forecast to strengthen to hurricane force over the weekend, the National Hurricane Center said.

If it does become a hurricane, it'll be only the second of the Atlantic hurricane season, following Erin, which became a hurricane in the central Atlantic just over a month ago, on Aug. 15.
