America’s social safety net is poised to become thinner if the Republicans’ massive tax and spending bill crosses the finish line, at a time when low-income consumers are struggling and recession fears linger.

A fiery Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., took to the Senate floor on Sunday evening to explain his vote from Saturday against the motion to proceed on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, condemning the legislation and saying it breaks President Donald Trump’s promises to protect Medicaid.

Senate Republicans have passed Donald Trump’s tax and spending bill, called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The bill includes tax cuts, no tax on tips and overtime, and more money for immigration and border security.
