Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez before Monday's transfer deadline with a view to boosting Pep Guardiola's faltering midfield. Gonzalez has a release clause in his contract understood to be worth $61.

Manchester City have secured the signing of midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Porto for a fee of €60 million (£49.9m/$62.1m). Gonzalez has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract and is City’s fourth signing of the window following the arrivals of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.

Gonzalez completed a £50m move from Porto to the Blues in the final hours of deadline day. City had been reluctant to pay that much for him, but after a 5-1 mauling at the Emirates on Sunday they dug deeper into their pockets to get a fifth signing of the January window over the line and complete a £180m spend.
