The St. Louis Cardinals could trade some of their starting pitching to the New York Yankees amid Clark Schmidt's injuries.

Schmidt will have the surgery Friday, and the procedure will be performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas. The 29-year-old right-hander will join Gerrit Cole as the second Yankee to undergo the surgery. Cole, the 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner, was operated on in March.

An MRI exam last Friday confirmed the injury. Schmidt, who said he had been dealing with elbow soreness since June 4, exited his start against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 3 after just three innings because of the discomfort.
